Research Projects: ANAC Literacy Research
The Adapted Neuropsychological Assessment of Children (ANAC) Literacy Research includes studies that examine how to adapt tests of thinking skills, language, and learning to accommodate the needs of children with disabilities. Our team is particularly interested in ways of identifying the capabilities of children who have limited speech and movement. This research is being conducted at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI) and Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital (Grand Rapids, MI). Currently, both sites are seeking the participation of children diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
Specifically, our research team is investigating the reliability and validity of computer accommodations to common cognitive and academic tests; tests that are similar to the types of assessments and measurements that are conducted in a school setting or in a neuropsychological assessment clinic. Strong emphasis is being placed upon literacy. During the research sessions, the children look at pictures and answer questions that will demonstrate their ability to see patterns, recognize letter sounds, and similar tasks.
