PIBS Preview

PREVIEW Eligibility:

  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident (only)
  • An academic background in science
  • Ph.D. degree goal in the Biomedical Sciences
  • Plan to apply to graduate school for Fall 2010 admission
  • Member of an underrepresented minority group, as defined by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
    The NSF defines an underrepresented group in science, mathematics, and engineering as African American, Chicano/Latino/Hispanic, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander.

Strong candidates will possess:

  • Extensive research experience in a laboratory setting (some applicants will have published abstracts or papers)
  • Strong letters of recommendation from lab mentor(s)
  • Strong motivation to pursue independent research

How to apply:

The application deadline for the University of Michigan PIBS PREVIEW (10/7/09) has passed.  Applicants will be notified of their status no later than October 15.  (Invited participants will receive details on how to arrange their visit at that time.)

Submit college transcript(s) as a PDF to pibs@umich.edu for each institution where undergraduate/graduate classes were attended (submitted transcript(s) can be unofficial but must include the name of the applicant and institution).

Solicit two (2) letters of recommendation from professors/research mentors who can evaluate your academic and scientific potential for graduate school, especially those that can comment on your research experiences.

Instructions for Letter Writers:
Faculty, program directors, and other professional scientists are encouraged to recommend all students they anticipate will succeed in a Ph.D. program at Michigan. Recommenders must submit their letter directly to pibs@umich.edu as soon as possible, but no later than the PREVIEW application deadline of Wednesday, October 7, 2009.
