The Michigan Union is the center for many student activities and is located near the heart of the
Michigan campus. The union provides for studying, recreation, and eating, and houses many of the

Nichols Arboretum, adjacent to the University campus, is one of the many
natural attractions located in Ann Arbor. Visitors can enjoy hundreds of
plant species native to Michigan while walking along the miles of hiking
trails that wind through its 123 acres. |

The University of Michigan was founded in 1817 as one of the first public universities in
the nation. The school was originally located in Detroit and relocated to its current location
in Ann Arbor in 1837. In its first year in Ann Arbor, the University had two professors and
seven students; today the University is host to approximately 24,000 undergraduates, 14,000
graduate students and 2,800 faculty members. Currently, the University of Michigan is one of
the world's leading public universities and it is one of only two public institutions consistently
