Welcome to PIBS 501 & 503!
Students wishing to enroll in PIBS 501 should register directly with OSEH. Please note that the information below reflects 2007 information for PIBS 503. 2008 information will be made available later this summer. Thank you!
PIBS 503--Research Responsibility and Ethics
PIBS 503 course content:
The Program in Biomedical Sciences coordinates a Friday afternoon series of meetings on a broad range of
research-related topics (Kate Barald, course director). The first four weeks provide an introduction to
“lab survival skills”, including library and database resources at the University, training in HIPAA
regulations and radiation safety, which provide the required student certifications. The next six weeks of
fall term finishing the week before Thanksgiving, also listed as PIBS 503, are a series of presentations and
discussions on Research Responsibilities and Ethics, required of all students who receive federal support.
This part of the course combines lectures or panel discussions (usually in the first hour), with small group
panel discussions based on the lectures and case studies.
PIBS 503 online syllabus:
Please note that this is a separate course for everyone but PIBS students. PIBS 503 sessions meet in the Lecture Halls (3rd floor MSII), then divide into small discussion groups that meet with a faculty member in another location. Please sign up to join a small group section. For those taking only PIBS 503 (Research Responsibility and Ethics), there will be sign-up sheets available in the PIBS office for small groups.
