PGY2 Residency in Pediatric Pharmacotherapy

The Department of Pharmacy Services at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers is recruiting applicants for a one-year ASHP accredited PGY2 Residency in Pediatric Pharmacotherapy. The specialty residency will begin July 1, 2009. The primary preceptor is Regine Caruthers, Pharm.D. The following training and experience will be gained:

Pediatric Pharmacy Practice: Clinical experience for this residency will be tailored to the individual's interest. Experience can be gained in the pediatric and neonatal intensive care units, pediatric cardiothoracic surgery unit, pediatric emergency room, pediatric operating room pharmacy, acute pain service and pediatric pharmacy satellites. There is also an opportunity for clinical rotations on the pediatric infectious disease, nephrology and pulmonary medicine services as well as other areas of general pediatrics. Experience in Pediatric Drug Information and Toxicology is available.

Research and Publications: Opportunities are available for participation in ongoing research projects including industry sponsored research. The resident may participate in the development and implementation of a research study protocol of interest. This could include drug utilization evaluations, pharmacokinetic/dynamic studies or other relevant pediatric clinical research. Experience in protocol and grant writing, data collection and analysis, some analytical laboratory experience, manuscript preparation and publication will be provided.

Development of writing and presentation skills is available through writing of review articles and research papers, providing written communication to other healthcare professionals, as well as presentations to the Department of Pharmacy personnel and at local, regional and national meetings.

Teaching: Teaching experience for both Pharm.D. students and pharmacy practice residents is provided. Experience involves didactic and bedside teaching. Participation in drug policy enforcement and in the medication distribution system is desirable.

Minimum qualifications for eligibility include graduation from an accredited College of Pharmacy and completion of a Pharmacy Practice Residency Program or equivalent experience. The application deadline is January 2, 2009. For more information please contact:
