Application Process

Listed below are the items required for application to the University of Michigan Health System Dietetic Internship program.

Applications must be postmarked by Friday, February 15, 2008. Please read and follow all directions carefully; we will not consider an incomplete application. It is your responsibility to make sure that all required materials are submitted on time.

  1. Application form. Dietetic Internship Application Form and Recommendation Form (i.e., the American Dietetic Association’s Supervised Practice Program Application)

  2. Letter of Application. Your letter should be no longer than one page in length, can be typed or word processed, and must follow proper business format. Address the following in your letter:
    • Discuss your goals and how they developed. Include specific experiences, responsibilities, special interests and/or significant people who helped shape your goals as well as the steps you have been taking to attain your goals.
    • Discuss specific strengths you have to offer to both the internship program and the profession of dietetics. Also discuss skills you need to improve/develop in order to become a competent practitioner.
    • Discuss your reasons for applying to the University of Michigan Health System and your expectations from the internship.
  3. Transcripts. Official transcript of credits from all colleges attended (transcripts must contain the official school stamp). A minimum overall GPA of 2.75 is required.

  4. Eligibility Proof. An original and signed "verification statement" or a "declaration of intent to complete degree and minimum academic requirements" from a Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education-accredited/approved Didactic Program in Dietetics is required to prove your eligibility to apply for the internship.

  5. Recommendation Letters. Three letters of recommendation (photocopies with original signatures are acceptable):
    • One from academic advisor
    • One from a major professor
    • One from your most recent or most relevant work supervisor (if you have not been employed, you may submit a recommendation letter from a professor)
  6. Fee. Application fee of $40.00. Personal checks or money orders are acceptable and may be made out to "University of Michigan Health System." Please do not send cash.

Please note: This packet is valid for the February 2008 application deadline only. An updated packet must be used if you apply after February 2008. All application materials become the property of the internship and cannot be returned. Paper copies of the application may be requested by contacting the Dietetic Internship office at 734-936-5197 or by mailing your request to the address above.

Applicants to the Dietetic Internships must participate in computer matching. Applicants should request instructions and a mark/sense card to prioritize their DI preferences from any ADA-approved Didactic Program in Dietetics or from D&D Digital Systems. This request should allow adequate turnaround time to meet the February deadline. There is no charge for computer matching that is due with the applicant's prioritized ranking.
