Conferences

Chief’s Conference brings together the Chair and/or Associate Chair, clinical faculty, residents, and students for an informal discussion of interesting, difficult, or instructive cases.  All residents, including interns, generally attend.  The format is case-based; case presentations are followed by a discussion of differential diagnosis, evaluation, and clinical management.  Basic medical science, psychosocial and socio-cultural issues, public health perspectives, and health care economics are often incorporated into the discussion.  Regular follow-up is provided for cases that have been previously presented.

Inpatient Rounds Family-centered work rounds are conducted by the attending faculty on all inpatient services seven days a week.  Each teaching service also has regularly structured teaching rounds.

Core Conferences are held at least twice weekly and are designed to provide the resident with a strong knowledge base in both primary and subspecialty care.   This core curriculum is augmented throughout the year by special conferences covering morbidity & mortality, medical- legal issues, ethics, sociocultural, and practice management.  A series of workshops and seminars complement these didactic sessions, covering topics as varied as leadership, child advocacy, and career development.

A weekly Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) Journal Club fosters practice-based learning and the evidence-based practice of Pediatrics.  A senior resident selects a clinical question of interest, reviews the relevant literature, and leads a discussion on the topic.  Each resident also prepares a one-page summary of the topic that is placed on our EBM website for future reference.  There is also a series of formal lectures that cover principles of evidence-based medicine, clinical research design, and the basics of statistical analysis.

Held weekly, Grand Rounds is a formal, case-based conference with the goal of presenting an in-depth, state-of-the-art review of a pertinent pediatric topic.  Grand Rounds is generally given by a Department faculty member, a visiting professor, or a guest speaker from another clinical department or school.

In July and August, a “Crash Course” for all new residents provides basic information which forms the foundation from which to learn.  This series covers management of pediatric emergencies, core pediatric skills, and the fundamentals of inpatient and primary care.

Subspecialty Conferences Individual Divisions within the Department offer many special interest conferences.  Residents attend and participate in many of these, especially while on specific electives or rotations.

On a regular basis, pediatricians of national distinction are invited as Visiting Professors to the Department of Pediatrics.  During these visits, the program consists of ward rounds, clinical conferences, symposia, and formal presentations by the visiting professors.
