The mission of the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology is to improve the respiratory health of children through outstanding clinical care, research and education. We strive to accomplish our mission while embracing the core values of respect, responsibility, family, and diversity.
Clinical Care
The Division of Pediatric Pulmonary provides for the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of children with acute and chronic respiratory diseases. Highlights include a nationally-recognized Cystic Fibrosis Center, one of the largest Pediatric Home Ventilator programs in the country, a state-of-the-art Pulmonary Function Laboratory for infants and children, a new Apnea and Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) program, a new Pediatric Asthma Disease Management program , and flexible bronchoscopy.
Research
The Division directs basic and clinical research programs related to asthma, cystic fibrosis and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Faculty research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and American Lung Association. Highlights include the study of: 1) rhinovirus-induced exacerbations of asthma and COPD; 2) biochemincal mechanisms regulating airway smooth muscle hypertrophy ; 3) airway function and inflammation in infants with persistent wheezing and BPD; 4) health effects of air pollution and allergens on asthmatic children; 5) diagnosis and treatment of cystic fibrosis lung disease in infants; 6) health services for patients with chronic respiratory failure; 7) airway immune responses in children requiring chronic home ventilation; and 8) role of macrophage subpopulations in obesity and asthma.
Education
In addition to teaching medical students and residents, the Division directs a Fellowship in Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine. The goal of this program is to train outstanding academic pediatric pulmonologists - life-long learners who will be future leaders in the field. The provided training is broad in scope and includes a strong faculty, diverse inpatient and outpatient population, superb pulmonary function laboratory, and numerous educational and research opportunities.
