Training Detail by Year


Year 1

Outpatient: Two to three half-days of general pediatric nephrology clinics per week, one half-day of pediatric transplant clinic per week, and one half-day of dialysis clinic per month (5 months).

Inpatient: The fellow will follow all pediatric renal inpatients including consults. The majority of inpatient service experience will be provided in the 1st year (6 months).

Call: The fellow will be on first call 2 weekends per calendar month and 50% of weeknights (while on inpatient rotations) with a staff nephrologist performing backup.

Teaching: During inpatient and outpatient months, fellows will receive both formal and informal teaching from Pediatric Nephrology and Internal Medicine Nephrology faculty regarding the following: critical review of literature; research design; data collection and analysis; statistics; preparation of abstracts, manuscripts, posters, and oral presentations; ethics; socioeconomic and medical/legal issues; cost containment; substance abuse/physician impairment; and medical informatics.

Dialysis: Throughout all 3 years, the fellow will receive instruction in the care of infants and children needing acute and chronic PD, acute and chronic HD, and CRRT.

Renal Biopsies: The first year fellow can anticipate performing approximately 30-40 native and transplant renal biopsies, with additional biopsies in years 2 and 3.

Year 2

Outpatient: One half-day per week will be spent in the general pediatric nephrology, renal transplant, or PD clinics.

Inpatient: There will be a modest amount of coverage for pediatric renal inpatients including consults with a staff nephrologist performing back-up (6 weeks inpatient per year).

Research: The fellow will spend the remaining time working on his/her clinical or basic science research project.

Call: The fellow will be on first call for 1 weekend per calendar month with a staff nephrologist performing backup. No week-night call will be required to allow for development of the fellow's research project (except while on inpatient clinical service).

Year 3

Outpatient: One half-day per week will be spent in the general pediatric nephrology, renal transplant, or PD clinics.

Inpatient: There will be a modest amount of coverage for pediatric renal inpatients including consults with a staff nephrologist performing back-up.

Research: The fellow will spend the remaining time completing his/her research project, with the goal of submitting one or more manuscripts for publication prior to completing of fellowship training.

Call: The fellow will be on first call for 1 weekend per calendar month with a staff nephrologist performing back-up.No week-night call will be required (except while on inpatient clinical service) to allow for completion of the fellow's research project.
