Neonatal-Perinatal
John Donald E. Barks, M.D.Director, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine
The Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine is a specialized, nationally recognized tertiary care center delivering care to newborn infants in the Holden Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Clinical Care
The Holden NICU provides state-of-the-art management of a wide variety of neonatal problems. The James and Lynelle Holden Perinatal Unit is one of the state's leading medical care facilities for high-risk infants. Devoted to neonatal care and research, the faculty are known as world authorities on therapeutic hypothermia, neonatal neuro-intensive care, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and ventilatory support.
Additional state-of-the-art care includes neonatal surgery, cardiovascular surgery, neonatal neurology, high frequency and liquid ventilation, and a number of other therapies unavailable at most hospitals. A special ground, helicopter, and fixed-wing newborn transport service provides medical stabilization and support for infants transported from a wide referral area. We have offered therapeutic hypothermia to babies with neonatal encephalopathy since 2000. Our therapeutic hypothermia referral guidelines are available here.
Our Brain Research and Innovative Care in Neonatology (Brain Care) program is available here.
Research
Faculty members within the Division are actively exploring different areas of neonatal research. Collaborative efforts exist with members of the Division of Pediatric Neurology, Division of Pediatric Pulmonology, the Department of Radiology, and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Education
The Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship is designed to provide a solid background in clinical neonatology and research techniques allowing trainees the flexibility and opportunities to develop a career in academic medicine. The program fulfills the requirements set forth by the American Board of Pediatrics, Sub-Board of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, and is fully accredited.
