Components

The Fellowship experience will include: coursework in health services concepts, issues, and research methods; active involvement in ongoing research programs; and mentorship for individual research.

Research Training

During the first two months of the program, Fellows will participate in the Summer Core Curriculum of the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at the University of Michigan. The intensive, interdisciplinary curriculum is designed to introduce Fellows to the health care system and to the field of health services research.

The NICHD Training Grant provides funding for Physician Fellows to perform graduate studies in a field related to their research work (e.g., Public Health, Public Policy, Economics). The University of Michigan is home to several outstanding graduate programs. Research Fellows may choose to enroll in courses focused on research design, methods, and analysis offered through the Institute for Social Research or the Department of Epidemiology Graduate Summer Session.

Research Program

Over the two-year program, each Physician Fellow will be expected to complete at least two research projects: one incorporating primary data collection and another an analysis of secondary data. The Program Directors will assist Fellows in developing a plan of research objectives under the mentorship of research faculty and with assistance from research support staff. Fellows will pursue those objectives to include: identifying key research questions; writing a literature review; developing a research proposal; conducting research; presenting findings at local and national meetings; preparing a manuscript for publication; and writing a follow-up grant proposal.

Seminars and Professional Socialization

The Fellowship holds a weekly workshop series in which Fellows present their research project progress. In addition, the workshops serve as an opportunity to discuss research methods and career development issues in depth.

Clinical Care

The purpose of the clinical portion of the program is for Fellows to gain comfort in the independent practice of clinical pediatrics and maintain the perspective of a practicing clinician. Fellows will spend one-half day each week caring for patients in a clinical setting for underserved populations. In addition, Fellows will participate in the education of residents and medical students.

Qualifications

Candidates must have completed their MD degree and residency training in pediatrics, family medicine, or combined internal medicine-pediatrics. Physician Fellows will be selected on the basis of their completed research, academic record, personal qualifications, and stated interest in pediatric health services research issues. Dual appointments with subspeciality fellowships are encouraged.
