What to say when you're in pain
- Tell your doctor or nurse.
- Describe how it feels:
"Dull aching", "Sharp", "Shooting", "Constant"
- Locate your pain:
"Lower Back", "Stomach", "Incision", etc.
- Rate it on a scale of zero to ten:
0 = no pain ,
10 = greatest pain possible
- Describe how pain interferes with your activities and sleep.
- Talk about what has helped to minimize pain in the past.
- Know what medications you are taking for pain.
- Ask about possible side effects such as constipation, upset stomach, cramping, dizziness and sleepiness.
- Ask who and when to call if your pain is not controlled.
