What to say when you're in pain

  1. Tell your doctor or nurse.
  2. Describe how it feels:
    "Dull aching", "Sharp", "Shooting", "Constant"
  3. Locate your pain:
    "Lower Back", "Stomach", "Incision", etc.
  4. Rate it on a scale of zero to ten:
    0 = no pain ,
    10 = greatest pain possible
  5. Describe how pain interferes with your activities and sleep.
  6. Talk about what has helped to minimize pain in the past.
  7. Know what medications you are taking for pain.
  8. Ask about possible side effects such as constipation, upset stomach, cramping, dizziness and sleepiness.
  9. Ask who and when to call if your pain is not controlled.
