Part 2:
Pain Policy Highlights

The UMHS policy is intended to assist practitioners in adhering to JCAHO standards. Important Highlights from this policy are:

  • Pain will be assessed in patients
  • A physician, nurse, and/or other HCP will identify the presence of pain as it relates to the purpose for a patient encounter at UMHHC
  • Where appropriate, pain intensity will be scored using standardized scales
    • Scores ranging from 0-10 are encouraged where appropriate
    • Documentation in the inpatient setting will be with other vital signs, while pain scores in ambulatory care will appear in the clinic notes
  • Ongoing assessment is necessary to evaluate changes in pain intensity or character as well as the effectiveness of treatment
  • A variety of pain management techniques will be employed i.e. pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic
  • Patients and families will receive information regarding pain assessment and management
  • Orientation, resource materials and ongoing opportunities will be provided to educate paient care staff at all levels.
  • QI monitoring will be established
