We
have started an interesting outcomes study on chronic sinusitis.
Chronic sinusitis effects 31 million people in the United States
and accounts for more than 16 million outpatient visits per
year and, as yet, an unknown amount of health care dollars.
Traditional sinus surgery was exenterative in nature, performed
often through external incisions, and associated with significant
pain and morbidity. In contrast, the more recent endoscopic
approaches to sinus disease are less invasive, less painful,
and have less morbidity.
With the current changes in the health care environment and
limitations on health care expenditures, information about functional
status, well being, and general health outcomes will be essential.
Policy analysts will need accurate outcomes data to compare
costs and benefits of different health care delivery systems.
Health care organizations will use outcome data to decide the
best value for the health care dollar. Clinicians, clinical
researchers, and purchasing groups will need outcomes data to
evaluate clinical effectiveness of interventions for disease
states.
We have developed an outcomes study for patients with chronic
sinusitis that assists as both general health measures and disease
specific health measures. We will follow patients with chronic
sinusitis who were treated with medical therapy or surgical
therapy to access patient outcomes of therapy over the short
term and long term.
