Welcome to the University of Michigan Orthopaedic Surgery Residency

The orthopaedic residency at the University of Michigan Hospitals is a fully accredited five-year clinical internship and residency program. The mission of the residency program is to prepare each resident for orthopaedic practice in any clinical setting. In addition, our program fulfills the mission of the University of Michigan Hospitals:

Excellence and Leadership in Patient Care, Research and Education

Six positions are available each year and are filled through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply early. Applicant materials and letters are reviewed in the fall and invitations for interviews are offered beginning in early December.

The clinical experience consists of rotations at the University Hospital, Mott Children's Hospital and the Ann Arbor VA Hosptial. These rotations provide the training experience with a complementary exposure to distinct patient populations that cover the clinical spectrum from general orthopaedics to a tertiary care environment.

A significant advantage enjoyed by the University of Michigan Orthopaedic residents is the emphasis that is placed on education. Our program is unique among large academic centers across the nation having no orthopaedic fellows. Our residents, therefore, are well prepared for the immediate practice of general orthopaedics or for further subspecialty training and academic careers.

The University of Michigan has a long and solid tradition of producing leaders in orthopaedic education, research and practice. The program, therefore, seeks residents who have the ability, desire and energy to continue this well-established Michigan tradition.
