U-Mís Howard Markel now a JAMA Contributing Writer

ANN ARBOR, MI – Howard Markel, M.D., Ph.D., director of the University of Michigan Center for the History of Medicine, has been named one of eight contributing writers to the Journal of the American Medical Association. The announcement appears in this week’s issue of JAMA in an editorial by Catherine DeAngelis and Phil Fontanarosa, JAMA editor in chief and executive deputy editor, respectively.

Dr. MarkelMarkel, the George E. Wantz Distinguished Professor of the History of Medicine, is a physician, medical educator and historian of medicine. In addition to more than 100 articles or reviews in the scholarly, peer-reviewed literature, his essays appear frequently in The New York Times, as well as Harper's, The Atlantic Monthly, The New Republic, The Wall Street Journal, The International Herald Tribune, The American Scholar, The Washington Post, The Baltimore Evening Sun, The Forward,  Redbook, ELLE, Child and Good Housekeeping and on National Public Radio's "Morning Edition" and "Marketplace." He also appears frequently as an expert on other national radio and television broadcasts.

At JAMA, the contributing writers are part of an initiative to increase the depth and breadth of coverage of important issues by providing scholarly, insightful and authoritative commentaries. Markel's charge is to write frequent essays exploring the interactions of medicine, society and culture.
