Michigan Visiting Nurses announces flu shot clinics

Visits to clinics down this year due to lack of ‘sense of urgency’
National Influenza Vaccination Week Nov. 26 – Dec. 2

ANN ARBOR, MI – Visits to flu clinics run by the University of Michigan Health System’s Michigan Visiting Nurses and other health care providers across the country are down this year, a decrease that MVN attributes to a current lack of a widespread flu outbreak and a subsequent complacency among the public. But the threat of a flu epidemic is as real as ever.

Flu Poster from CDC“We can’t stress enough how important it is for people to get their flu shots. This is one of the easiest things people can do to stay healthy this winter,” says Toni Henkemeyer, RN, clinical supervisor of MVN. “The public may not feel a sense of urgency about the spreading of the flu because it has not been a bad year so far. But it is always wise to protect yourself and your family because we never know how serious or widespread influenza will be in any given year.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has designated National Influenza Vaccination Week as Nov. 26 to Dec. 2, and Nov. 27 has been designated as national Children’s Flu Vaccination Day, with a focus on vaccinating high-risk children. Each year, more than 20,000 children are hospitalized as a result of influenza. This day will help raise awareness about the value of vaccinating children-especially high-risk children-and their close contacts.

Henkemeyer also notes the importance of healthy adults getting vaccinated to protect themselves as well as their children, parents and others with whom they are in contact.

MVN is announcing the dates for flu clinics to be held throughout the area in November and December. Flu shots are $33 this year, and pneumonia shots will be offered for $84. Payment options include cash, check and credit card, as well as Blue Care Network, CareChoices, Health Alliance Plan, M-Care, Medicare Part B and Priority Health, all of which cover the entire cost of the flu shot.

MVN is partnering with Busch’s stores for many of the clinics, as well as churches and community centers.

The clinics are open to the public, and most clinics are limited to people 12 and older. For a weekly listing of flu clinics, call MVN’s flu hotline at 888-547-7295 or visit www.umvn.org.
