U-M regents approve appointment of Bloom as Urology department chair

ANN ARBOR, MI – The University of Michigan Board of Regents today approved the appointment of David A. Bloom, M.D., as chair of the U-M Medical School’s Department of Urology. His appointment is retroactive to March 1.

David Bloom, MDBloom, the Jack Lapides Professor of Urology, is an internationally recognized pediatric urologic surgeon who has provided leadership to the U-M Medical School since 1984. He replaces James E. Montie, M.D., who stepped down as chair to continue his research on the quality of care for patients with urologic cancer.

“Dr. Bloom has an exceptional combination of experience, intellect and leadership across the department’s missions of clinical, research and teaching excellence. I have no doubt the Department of Urology will continue as one of the country’s premier academic urology programs under his guidance,” says Interim Dean James Woolliscroft, M.D.

Bloom received his B.S. (1967) from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his M.D. (1971) from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He completed residencies in surgery and urology at the University of California – Los Angeles, in addition to a fellowship in pediatric urology at the Institute of Urology of the University of London, England.

After a four-year stint in the Army at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Washington, D.C., leaving as a lieutenant colonel, Bloom joined the U-M Medical School as an assistant professor and chief of pediatric urology in 1984.  He became associate professor in 1986 and rose to his present rank of professor of urology in 1993.

Throughout his career at U-M, Bloom has achieved a solid record of clinical and service contributions. He was a member of the Medical School Admissions Committee for 15 years and twice served on the Executive Committee on Clinical Affairs. Since 2000, Bloom also has served with distinction as the Medical School’s associate dean for faculty. With his appointment as chair of the Department of Urology, Bloom is stepping down from the deanship.

Bloom is a prolific author and lecturer, and a medical historian. He has authored more than 150 papers and 60 book chapters, serves on the editorial boards of the journals Urology and Contemporary Urology, and consults on urologic content for Stedman’s Medical Dictionary. He has had numerous leadership positions in national urology organizations and continues as a trustee of the American Board of Urology and member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Medical Specialties. His clinical interests include genitourinary reconstruction, lower urinary tract dysfunction, genital anomalies and neurogenic bladder laparoscopy.

The Department of Urology ranks sixth in the nation among urology programs in funding from the National Institutes of Health.
