Kids Burn Camp Named Kiwanis Governor's Project
Michigan Kiwanis to Present Kids Burn Camp with $27,000 donation on May 23
ANN ARBOR, MI – Kids Burn Camp, a camp for burn injured children managed by the University of Michigan Trauma Burn Center, Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids and Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, has been designated as the 2006 Governor’s Project of the Michigan District of Kiwanis International.
At noon on Tuesday, May 23, Governor of the Michigan District of Kiwanis International Fred Model and Chair of the Governor’s Project Bob Breyer will present the funds raised by Kiwanis clubs throughout Michigan to Kids Burn Camp. Representative from the three hospitals, including U-M Burn Director Stewart Wang, M.D., Ph.D., will be present to accept the check at the U-M Trauma Burn Center.
Each year, the Governor of the Michigan District of Kiwanis International selects a charitable project or program with a mission and vision that matches that of the Kiwanis organization. The designated Governor’s Project then becomes the benefactor of the statewide fundraising efforts of the Kiwanis.
After naming Kids Burn Camp the 2006 Governor’s Project, the Michigan District of Kiwanis pledged to raise $25,000, which would cover the cost to send 50 children to camp. Kiwanis went on to exceed their goal, raising $27,000 for the camp.
Every year, children who have been treated for a burn injury within the state of Michigan are invited to attend Kids Burn Camp. This extraordinary week-long camp is designed for children between the ages of 8 to17 who have survived devastating burn injuries. This camp is offered at no charge, and is made possible through donations and community support.
Kids Burn Camp counselors include nurses, occupational and physical therapists, Michigan firefighters, and social workers who have experience in treating and caring for pediatric burn patients. Many of these dedicated professionals spend their week with the kids at camp as volunteers, which made the program particularly poignant to Model.
“I was impressed by the passion and commitment of the nurses, social workers and fire fighters who are involved with this project and return year after year on their own time, at their own expense,” says Model. “I chose Kids Burn Camp as my project because all children deserve the best possible start in life. These kids need our support — together we can make a difference in the life of a child.”
The U-M Trauma Burn Center is a Level 1 Trauma and Burn Verified Center by the American College of Surgeons and the American Burn Association. The center is a leader in innovative and effective patient care and has a strong commitment to research, education and injury prevention. Each year, an average of 1,500 patients suffering from traumatic injuries and burns are admitted to the Center.
