ANN ARBOR, MI - The University of Michigan Health System has retained its position among the best hospitals in the nation and once again is the only hospital in Michigan to make the honor roll of “America’s Best Hospitals” in the annual U.S. News & World Report rankings.
The rankings also illustrate the breadth of expertise at UMHS, which earned high marks for 16 specialties. Three specialties were in the top 10: ear, nose and throat (4th), cancer (9th) and geriatrics (9th). Several specialties moved up from the 2004 rankings: ear, nose and throat, from 5 in 2004 to 4 in 2005; rehabilitation, from 12 to 11; digestive disorders, from 13 to 11; orthopedics, from 23 to 15; and heart and heart surgery, from 19 to 18. “Every day, I have the pleasure of working with some of the nation's most skilled and dedicated health care professionals. Our faculty and staff ensure that we continually strive for the highest levels of patient care,” says Larry Warren, executive director and chief executive officer of the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers. “It is rewarding that their efforts have been acknowledged amongst the best academic centers in the country." The rankings further illustrate UMHS’s strength in a range of national and state rankings. This year, the U-M Medical School was ranked 9th among the top 10 best research-oriented medical schools by U.S. News & World Report. M-CARE, UMHS’s managed care organization, received an “excellent” accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for its commercial and Medicaid HMO health plans. It has maintained the highest rating possible every year since 2000. U.S. News & World Report uses several factors in determining the “America’s Best Hospitals” rankings, including reputation among board-certified physicians, mortality statistics, nursing care, medical technology, palliative care and discharge planning. In the categories of Ophthalmology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation and Rheumatology, hospitals were ranked only by their reputation among board-certified specialists. UMHS’s rankings in each specialty category are:
UMHS moved up in five specialty areas from 2004:
The "America's Best Hospitals" methodology was devised in 1993 at the University of Chicago. The 2005 rankings were produced by RTI International in Triangle Park, N.C. This year’s edition of the best hospitals rankings will be published in the July 18 issue, which will be available at newsstands July 11. The list also is available online at www.USNews.com.
