ANN ARBOR, MI - The University of Michigan Health System was named one of 10 2005 Premier Healthcare Employer in the country by the Premier Workplaces organization. The Health System was recognized for its outstanding people practices and innovative human resources programs that attract and retain diverse talent. The Health System's total rewards compensation philosophy, employee and career development programs, commitment to diversity, focus on a family-friendly workplace and positive work-life balance, wellness programs to promote healthy lifestyles for employees, retirement plan options and financial planning assistance, Employee Assistance Program, and openness, especially on the part of senior leadership, to staff input regarding institutional processes, policies and practices were noted as reasons it is an exemplary and desirable workplace.

phe Logo“We are extremely proud of this recognition,” says Larry Warren, director and CEO of the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers. “The Health System strives to attract and retain the best and brightest health care professionals, and to provide a working environment that encourages professional development as well as personal work-life balance. I think that this honor indicates our success in nurturing a diverse, talented and motivated workforce.”

The health care industry faces challenges of workforce shortages in disciplines such as nursing, pharmacy, medical technology, respiratory therapy and diagnostic imaging. Using innovative programs to attract and retain talent is an effective way to stay competitive with other health care organizations and with institutions outside the health care industry.

Premier Healthcare Employer is an industry specific recognition, rather than a geographic or general comparison of employers in differing fields. It represents a "best in class" standing in the industry for the named employers. In order to be considered, all interested employers had to complete an application covering: compensation; benefits; diversity strategies; learning and development; work/life balance; and culture and values. The extensive application included approximately 200 questions including both yes/no responses and short answers. Candidates were also requested to submit collateral information to further support their application.

The 2005 Premier Healthcare Employer list was founded and sponsored by Premier Workplaces, an organization that has grown out of an interest in researching the qualities and attributes of engaging workplaces and promoting workplace excellence and offers information, training, ideas, and consulting to help improve workplaces and acknowledges outstanding employers thorough recognition programs. The list was co-sponsored by JWT Specialized Communications, a global full-service employment advertising, communications and consulting firm with over 50 years of experience, and in-depth health care expertise.
