ANN ARBOR, MI The University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers is the first not-for-profit health care organization to receive the 2005 Performance Through People Award by the Forum for People Performance Management and Measurement at Northwestern University. The award honors organizations that successfully capitalize on human interactions among employees, customers and vendors that impact its long-term growth. Previous winners include Southwest Airlines, The Container Store, CDW Computer Centers, Dell, Nordstrom and Marriott. It showcases our ongoing commitment to employee recognition and its relationship to our strategic plan and goals, says Denise White, chair of the Employee Recognition Committee and coordinator for institution wide employee recognition programs at the UMHHC. This award also provides us with opportunities to share our best practices with internal and external customers. People Performance Management refers to the growing reliance on integrated business strategies that promote organizational growth by focusing on human capital maximizing employee and consumer performance to facilitate growth and increase profit margins. People Performance Management tactics include motivation or performance improvement award programs (travel, merchandise, bonuses), training and education, work-life balance programs, internal communications, business meetings, benefits and perquisites, consumer promotions and more. Successful People Performance initiatives at the UMHHC include in-depth institutionalized recognition programs that are proactive and strategic. These programs play a key role in the UMHHC's management protocol, from the offices of the chief executive officer, chief operating officer and department supervisors to a dedicated recognition Web site that ensures institution wide consistency. The UMHHC's Employee Recognition Committee receives annual funding to provide education, training, resources and support for a multi-level strategic approach to recognition. "The UMHHC has a long history of employee recognition. I'm very pleased that we received this national recognition and extremely proud of the dedicated team of employees who set the strategy and coordinate our recognition activities, says Deborah Childs, the U-M Health System's chief human resource officer. The UMHHC was recently recognized in U.S. News & World Report's 2005 edition of America's Best Hospitals as one of 16 institutions to gain Honor Roll status. The UMHHC is also one of 10 Premier Healthcare Employers nationwide for 2005 and was recently named one of Metro Detroit's 101 Best & Brightest Companies to Work For, for its outstanding people practices and innovative human resources programs. About the Forum: Launched in 2002 as a new unit within Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism's Integrated Marketing Communications department, the Forum is dedicated to the development of research and education programs in the field of People Performance Management.
