ANN ARBOR, MI –The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical School will host a winter film series at the Michigan Theater, 603 E. Liberty St. in Ann Arbor starting Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006.

Psych Hospital 1910The film series is part of a year-long celebration of the centennial anniversary of the U-M Department of Psychiatry. There are seven classic films with a psychiatric theme in the series, and each features a faculty commentator who will talk about either the historical context or the psychiatric content of each film.

The series begins with the classic 1948 film The Snake Pit, about a woman (Olivia de Havilland) who finds herself in a state mental institution but has no memory of how she got there. Following the film, Jonathan Metzl, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of psychiatry and women's studies and director of the Program in Culture, Health, and Medicine will be the featured commentator. Other films in the series include Vertigo, Three Faces of Eve and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

The films are shown on select Sundays in January – April from 3 – 5 p.m. and are open to the public. Admission is the standard Michigan Theater rate: $8.50 for general admission or $6.76 for students, veterans, seniors and children under 12. Complete details on the films, the dates they are showing and the guest commentators can be found at www.med.umich.edu/psych/centennial/centennial_events.htm
