ANN ARBOR, MI – During the evening of Monday, Oct. 31, staff and volunteers from the University of Michigan Trauma Burn Center and the Ann Arbor Fire Department will travel door-to-door in Ann Arbor to distribute batteries in an effort to encourage residents to change the batteries in their smoke detectors when they set their clocks back one hour as part of daylight savings.

Trauma Burn LogoThe “Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery” community program aims to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining working smoke detectors. The program reminds homeowners to change their smoke detector battery in the spring and fall, as daylight savings time begins and ends.

More than 300 9-volt batteries were donated by Energizer to make this local Ann Arbor program possible.

The National Fire Protection Association estimates that in one-quarter of reported home fires occur in houses that do not have working smoke detectors, most often due to missing, disconnected or dead batteries.

Approximately 70 percent of home fire deaths occur in houses with no smoke alarms, or no working smoke alarms.

For more information about the “Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery” program, call U-M Trauma Burn at (734) 998-8451 or (734) 998-8452.

The ‘Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery' program is just one of the many community outreach and fire injury prevention programs coordinated by the U-M Trauma Burn Center.
