ANN ARBOR, MI -For the second year, four University of Michigan Health System sites received the prestigious 2003 Governor's Award of Excellence for Improving Preventive Care in the Ambulatory Care Setting. Brighton Health Center, Briarwood Family Practice, Chelsea Family Practice, and Ypsilanti Family Medicine have each been recognized with a signed certificate from Governor Jennifer Granholm for their commitment to providing excellent care. The award, which reflects the U-M Health System's continued excellence in preventive health practices, is for demonstrating success in three areas: yearly mammagrams for women over 50; adult immunizations against influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia in patients over 65 who are chronically ill; and diabetes care which includes annual dilated eye exams, yearly foot exams, annual lipid profiles, and annual HbA1c testing to determine blood glucose levels. Based upon measures set by the Michigan
Peer Review Organization (MPRO)
and the Governor’s office, the award aims to challenge Michigan
health providers to enhance their commitment to improving preventive
measures of care. “We are pleased that people are realizing this is important,” she
says. “Because of our previous two years of success, more of our
sites are participating for 2004 and we expect to see even more in 2005.”
