ANN ARBOR, MI - The nation’s only Life Sciences Orchestra, made up of members of the University of Michigan’s medical, health and science community, will kick off its fourth season on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004 with a concert at 2 p.m. at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor.
The orchestra will be led by music director Laura Jackson, a doctoral student in the U-M School of Music’s noted conducting program. Robert P. Kelch, M.D., U-M executive vice president for medical affairs, will introduce the orchestra. Admission is free; donations will be accepted to help support the orchestra. A reception will follow. The Michigan Theater is located at 603 E. Liberty St. The LSO brings together faculty, staff, students, volunteers and alumni from the medical, health and life sciences areas of the University of Michigan, giving them an outlet for their musical talents and a chance to interact with one another across academic boundaries. Members include doctors, medical students and residents, staff, nurses, public health specialists, biologists, pharmacists, dentists and family members.
The orchestra, which made its debut in January 2001 at the Michigan Theater, performs each year in mid-winter and spring. Its next concert will be on Wednesday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m. at Hill Auditorium, in honor of the grand opening of the U-M Life Sciences Institute. Founded by students and staff from the U-M Health System, the LSO is a key part of the UMHS Gifts of Art program.
