ANN ARBOR, MI - The nation's only Life Sciences Orchestra, made up of members of the University of Michigan 's medical, health and life science community, will salute the grand opening of the U-M's newest science building with a concert in honor of the U-M Life Science Institute.
Fittingly, the concert will open with Consecration of the House (Die Weihe des Hauses) , an overture by Beethoven originally written for the opening of a Viennese theater but just as suited to the grand opening of a 230,000-square-foot scientific research facility. Next on the program is the first movement from Sibelius' Violin Concerto , with soloist Kent Rice, an alumnus of the U-M biochemistry program and the winner of the LSO's second-ever Concerto Competition. The program, and the LSO's fourth season, will conclude with Mussorgsky's grand suite, “Pictures at an Exhibition,” as arranged by Ravel.
The LSO and the LSI have much in common. Both were founded in the spirit of the U-M's Life Sciences Initiative, which seeks to encourage scientists and health professionals to work together, surmounting the traditional boundaries between academic disciplines and units in the basic sciences, health sciences, health care, engineering, social science, and the humanities. The LSO brings together faculty, staff, students, volunteers and alumni from the medical, health and life sciences areas of the University, giving them an outlet for their musical talents and a chance to interact with one another across academic boundaries. Members include doctors, medical students and residents, staff, nurses, public health specialists, biologists, pharmacists, dentists and family members. Founded by students and staff from the U-M Health System, the LSO is a key part of the UMHS Gifts of Art program. The orchestra made its debut in January 2001 at the Michigan Theater, and performs each year in mid-winter and spring.
