ANN ARBOR, MI - Hockey fans, the long wait is finally over! Some of hockey's greatest and best-known players – Steve Yzerman, Chris Chelios, Nicklas Lidstrom, Aaron Ward, Manny Legace and Kris Draper – will be hitting the ice again. On Thursday, Dec. 2, Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor will host an all-star line-up of former U-M hockey players and current professional hockey players, along with the U.S. National under-18 hockey team, as part of the "Pro-Am Skate for Mott" event. The hockey event will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. Dave Roberts, a former U-M hockey club member and professional hockey player, organized the hockey event to get his fellow hockey players and former U-M teammates back on the ice for a good cause. Roberts decided to make the Mott campaign the focus of the charity event following a conversation with his former hockey coach at U-M, Red Berenson. “After talking with Red and learning how impressed he was with the care his twin grandchildren received at Mott, I knew we had found the best group to play this game for,” says Roberts, who played hockey at U-M from 1989 to 1993. “These guys have been dying to play hockey, and as soon as I mentioned Mott to them, they all were ready to help.” Other pros filling out the Pro-Am Skate for Mott roster include Bryan Smolinski, Sergei Samsonov, Chris Tamer, Bill Muckalt, Doug Brown, Chris Osgood, Kip Miller, Kevin Miller, David Harlock and Brian Rolston, with many more professional hockey players expected to sign on to play before game night. In addition to watching this all-star game, fans will have the opportunity to bid on items up for auction at the game, including signed jerseys right off their favorite players' backs. Fans at the game will also have the chance to take part in a raffle for a seat on the players' bench, and get autographs from the players after the game. Tickets for the game are $10 with all of the proceeds benefiting the “Champions for Children” campaign. Tickets can be purchased at area MDen stores, the Ann Arbor Ice Cube and at Yost the night of the game. About the Champions for Children campaign The “Champions for Children” campaign, lead by co-chairs U-M head football coach Lloyd Carr, U-M Regent David A. Brandon and wives Laurie Carr and Jan Brandon, kicked-off in May 2004 to build for the future of children's and women's health in Michigan. The “Champions for Children” campaign is part of the $2.5 billion "Michigan Difference" campaign taking place throughout the University. Designed in the 1950s, Mott is currently struggling to keep up with recent advances in medical technology, patient care and research due to space limitations. Although its patients are small, Mott's needs are great. Mott hopes by increasing its capacity and clinic space, it will be able to meet that need by providing sick and injured children in Michigan, the United States and across the globe with even greater access to U-M's world-class medical care.
