ANN ARBOR, MI - The University of Michigan Health System's Multidisciplinary Pain Center is one of the 35 top hospital-based pain management centers in the country, according to a recent article in Good Housekeeping, a magazine read by nearly 25 million people.
The Multidisciplinary
Pain Center provides comprehensive services for the evaluation and treatment
of chronic disabling pain. It's staffed by a combination of physicians,
nurses, psychologists, social workers and physical therapists. People
who have not benefited from previous pain therapies say they have found
the center's approach to diagnosis and treatment helpful. Pain that persists beyond the usual healing course of an acute injury or disease and does not respond to standard medical treatment is considered chronic. Persistent pain can also result from chronic diseases such as arthritis, cancer, or musculoskeletal or neurological disorders. Chronic pain affects all aspects of a person's life, including daily activities, family life, work, leisure time, sleep patterns and mood. "I'm thrilled to have this recognition placed on a well deserving center and faculty," Mullin says about the Good Housekeeping article, 35 Top Pain Centers. "It is nice to see our facility noticed in a forum meant to reach the average public. That is who we serve day-to-day." In conjunction with Castle Connolly Medical, Ltd., an organization which provides health care consumers with a source to identify physicians in their own community, Good Housekeeping created a comprehensive guide to locate the 35 cutting-edge pain centers all over the country. This guide is a result of a physician-led research team that evaluated the credentials and licensing of all centers nominated for inclusion in the publication. The guide to the 35 Top Pain Centers is available in the May 2003 issue of Good Housekeeping. Visit www.goodhousekeeping.com for a complete listing of centers. Patients experiencing
chronic pain should consult their individual physicians. The Multidisciplinary
Pain center accepts patients on a referral basis only. For more information
