ANN ARBOR, MI - The nation's only Life Sciences Orchestra, made up of members of the University of Michigan's medical and science community, will conclude its third season on Sunday, April 13, 2003 with a concert at 2 p.m. at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor.
The orchestra will be led by music director Laura Jackson, a doctoral student in the U-M School of Music's noted conducting program. Lazar Greenfield, M.D., U-M interim executive vice president for medical affairs, will introduce the orchestra. Admission is free; donations will be accepted to help support the orchestra. A reception will follow. The LSO brings together U-M faculty, staff and students involved in medicine and the life sciences, giving them a new outlet for their musical talents and a chance to interact with others across academic boundaries. Members include doctors, medical students and residents, staff, nurses, public health specialists, biologists, pharmacists, dentists and family members. The LSO's mission of bringing together all corners of the life sciences at the U-M parallels the University's own Life Sciences Initiative, which seeks to advance research and education within and among those disciplines. The orchestra made its debut in January 2001 at the Michigan Theater. It performs each year in mid-winter and spring. The LSO was founded by students and staff from the U-M Health System, and is a program of the U-M Health System's Gifts of Art program. For more information, visit www.umich.edu/~lsorch, send e-mail to orchestra@umich.edu, or call (734) 936-ARTS. Pioneer High School is located at 601 W. Stadium Blvd., at the intersection with South Main Street, near the U-M football stadium. Concertgoers should use the entrance nearest the large flagpole. NOTE TO REPORTERS
