ANN ARBOR, MI - Recovery from a burn injury is a life-long journey. The University of Michigan Trauma Burn Center is sending 20 children who were treated at the center for burn injuries to Burn Camp. This special week is specifically designed for children ages 8 to 17 who have survived devastating burn injuries. Camp will be held Aug. 17 to Aug. 22 at Camp Manitou-Lin in Middleville, Mich.

Trauma Burn LogoWhen a child leaves the hospital after physically recovering from their burns, they return to their schools, friends and families where they are often the only burn survivor. They must contend with many difficult psychological, physical and emotional issues such as peer acceptance, as well as self-acceptance. The U-M Trauma Burn Center staff recognizes this difficult and often painful transition.

While the staff provides school re-entry education to their community, it doesn't eliminate their embarrassment and feelings of being different.

Consequently, the staff understands the importance for children and teens to be with other kids who have experienced the same injuries, painful rehabilitation and social consequences. They can share their emotions and stories in a safe, nurturing and fun environment.

In addition to participating in usual camp activities – swimming, horseback riding, hiking, canoeing, and crafts — the children also gain social confidence and the ability to cope with life after being burned.

The Burn Camp counselors are comprised of U-M nurses, occupational and physical therapists, Michigan Firefighters, and social workers who have extensive expertise in treating and caring for pediatric burn patients. It also allows interaction with caregivers outside of the medical atmosphere. U-M Trauma Burn's goal is for the kids to not only have a great time, but to experience personal growth.

Children from three other Michigan regional burn centers will also attend Burn Camp. This provides a larger community and the opportunity to make new friends throughout the state.

There is no charge to any camper for participation in this program. Every child treated at the U-M Trauma Burn Center is offered the opportunity to attend Burn Camp, which is made possible through generous donations from organizations, corporations, and individuals. The U-M Trauma Burn Center is a non-profit, charitable, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) corporation.
