The University of Michigan Health System (UMHS), in conjunction with the Women's Health Resource Center and the MFit Health Education Resource Center are working together to ensure that you have the best possible access to the answers you might have about staying healthy during your pregnancy.  The following is a short overview of the programs and services you can find at each of these centers. In addition, we have included some other resources you may wish to contact.  Being informed and making educated decisions about your health and the health of your baby is very important to us.  Feel free to use any of these excellent resources to learn more about your prenatal health care. 

The University of Michigan Hospitals & Health Centers

The University of Michigan Hospitals is one of the key components of the Health System. Since its founding in 1869, the hospital complex has provided health care, programs of education and research, and referral support for other health care providers and institutions in Michigan. 

As a teaching resource, the Hospitals are used for the training of approximately 4,000 students each year in the techniques of modern clinical medicine; this includes approximately 820 physicians in residency training in all medical and surgical specialties. The Hospital serves as the core teaching facility for the U-M Medical School and provides the basic clinical experience for medical students as well as students of nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, social work and public health. 

Women's Hospital


Women's Hospital is dedicated to the care of pregnant women and their unborn children in a family-centered atmosphere. The Birth Center, was one of the first facilities in the country to offer single-room maternity care to all mothers and families, including those at high risk. The 22-room Birth Center allows women to labor, give birth, recover and keep their babies with them in one private room until it is time to go home. Women's Hospital is southeast Michigan's regional perinatal center for high-risk pregnancies. A variety of specialized outpatient gynecological services also is provided in such areas as gynecology/oncology, endocrinology, infertility and psychosexual counseling. UM Resource Centers

  • MFit Health Education Resource Center (HERC)

The HERC is a full service library with a comprehensive collection of electronic, print, and audiovisual resources. Patients of the U-M Health System, MCARE members, and UMHS faculty and staff may take advantage of a variety of services all at no, or low cost.  Services include: lending library on pregnancy, parenting, and other health topics, professional searches for information on particular topics, handouts/fact sheets/pamphlets free of charge, Internet and computer access, and educational classes.  The HERC is located at East Ann Health Center, 4260 Plymouth Rd., Ann Arbor.  For information call (734) 647-5645. 

  • Women's Health Education Resource Center (WHRC)

WHRC offers free health information, sound advice, and enthusiastic encouragement regarding women's health issues.  Staff is available to discuss wellness and health programs, locate information, and refer women to appropriate health care providers or community agencies.  The Resource Center is located in the University of Michigan Hospital Complex on Level 1 of Taubman Center next to Reception Area E.  For information call (734) 936-8886.

Women's Health

  • National Women's Health Resource Center

NWHRC's primary goal is to educate healthcare consumers and empower them to make intelligent decisions. NWHRC does this by providing you with easy-to-understand and easy-to-reach information and services.  For information visit them on-line at www.healthywomen.org.

  • University of Michigan Hospitals Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Provides comprehensive treatment planning and a broad range of services for patients with normal and high-risk pregnancies. They also offer a broad range of gynecological services, including urology, reproductive endocrinology, adolescent gynecology, and oncology.  They can also see patients who need treatment for menopause, premenstrual syndrome, ovulation, gynecologic urology, in-vitro fertilization, pelvic pain, prenatal diagnostics and genetics counseling, adolescent gynecology, care of the mentally handicapped, ovulation induction and others.  To schedule an appointment with a physician call 1-800-211-8181.  For information visit them on-line at www.med.umich.edu/obgyn.

Childbirth Preparation

  • American Academy of Husband-Coached Childbirth

  • Birthing with Joy

Provides Bradley method of childbirth preparation classes.  Private sessions are available, as well as Doula service.  For a current class schedule, information about Bradley Method, or to sign up for a class, call (734) 475-0022.

  • The Center for the Childbearing Year

A nonprofit organization that promotes healthy families by providing education, resources, and services that empower pregnant women, their families, and professionals who work with them during their childbearing year.  Classes include holistic childbirth preparation, newborn & infant care, and breastfeeding.  The Center offers a free Doula program to low-income and/or high risk pregnant women.  The Center also has a lending library, support groups, Doula referral network, and other community resources.  For information call (734) 663-1523 or visit them on-line at www.Center4CBY.com

  • The Lamaze Association of Ann Arbor

Offers classes in childbirth preparation, sibling preparation, infant care, infant CPR, breast-feeding basics, prenatal yoga, parent-toddler play group, postpartum mothers' group, and miscarriage & newborn loss support group.  Private classes are available upon request.   • UM North Campus Family Health Service

Classes in childbirth education.  For information call (734) 647-1636

  • University of Michigan Visiting Nurses

Provide a one time 3-hour childbirth class.  Classes fill up quickly.  For information or to register call (800) 880-0020, ask for Joanna Kosmalski or Kathy Leonard.

  • Washtenaw Community College

Classes in childbirth preparation.  New classes begin each semester.  For information or to register visit them on-line at www.wccnet.edu/lwl/

Pregnancy and Parenting

  • Boot Camp for New Dads

Taught by fathers, this workshop builds pride and confidence in caring for your baby.  You'll learn lots of practical information on parenthood, baby care, becoming a family and supporting the new mom.  You'll get hands on experience in holding and comforting a baby with the help of "veteran" dads.  The class is offered in five counties in Michigan, including Washtenaw and Wayne.  For information visit them on-line at http://www.newdads.com

  • Family Pride Coalition

The mission of the Family Pride Coalition is to advance the well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered parents and their families through mutual support, community collaboration, and public understanding.  For information call (202) 331-5015 or visit them on-line at www.familypride.org

  • Lamaze Childbirth Association of Ann Arbor

Infant Care Series (4 sessions) includes discussions, demonstrations, and information on breastfeeding.  For information call (734) 973-1014.

  • MFit Baby Care Basics

Learn the basics of caring for your newborn once you return home from the hospital.  This class covers normal newborn appearance, diapering, bathing, feeding, burping, holding, and other important topics for new parents.  Classes are offered at the East Ann Arbor Health Center on the THIRD Saturday of each month from 10:00 am-12:00 noon, at the Brighton Health Center on the FIRST Saturday of each month from 10:00 am-12:00 noon, and at the Canton Health Center one Wednesday evening per month from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm.  Classes are $10.00 per person.  For information call the Health Education Resource Center at (734) 647-5645 or (800) 433-6348. 

  • MFit Preparing for Parenthood

Prepare for the joys and inevitable challenges of parenthood.  This class is chock full of useful information and helpful resources for new, expecting parents.  Learn about your child's development, how to safety-proof your home, the importance of taking care of yourself, your relationships, and more.  Classes are offered at the East Ann Arbor Health Center on the FIRST Saturday of each month from 10:00 am-12:00 noon and on the THIRD Tuesday of each month from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm.  Classes are $10.00 per person.  For information call the Health Education Resource Center at (734) 647-5645 or (800) 433-6348. 

  • Maternal and Infant Support Services (MSS/ISS)

MSS/ISS is a support program for pregnant and parenting women with Medicaid.  The program includes both clinic and home based services from an interdisciplinary team of social workers, dieticians and registered nurses.  For information call (734) 936-9758.

Breastfeeding Resources

  • La Leche League

La Leche League is an international, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing support, encouragement, information, and education to women who want to breastfeed.   Provides referrals to local groups and answers to breastfeeding questions.  For information call (800) 525-3243. 

  • La Leche League of Ann Arbor

La Leche League groups in the Ann Arbor area, and information about La Leche International.  To receive a schedule or for information call (734) 332-9080.

  • Le Leche League of Metro Detroit

Dedicated to supporting breastfeeding women.  For meeting times and locations in Macomb, Oakland, St. Claire, and Wayne counties, call the central information line at (313) 438-1015.

  • Lamaze Childbirth Preparation Association of Ann Arbor

Breastfeeding classes available through Lamaze.  Breastfeeding class includes information on getting started, positioning, and common problems.  Combining Breastfeeding and Working Class is especially designed to address the specific needs of breastfeeding working mothers.  Includes discussion, techniques, and options.  For information call (734) 973-1014.

  • McPherson Hospital

McPherson Hospital in Livingston Country offers classes in breastfeeding.  For information call (800) 231-2211.

  • Garden City Hospital

Garden City Hospital offers classes in breastfeeding.  For information call (734) 458-4330.

Hospital Tours

  • University of Michigan Hospital Tours

Tours of the maternity units are offered weekly.  The program begins with a short program and is followed by a walking tour of the Birthing Area and the Mother/Baby Unit.  This is a good chance to become familiar with the unit and to learn about the many options and choices of service that exist.  Tour is free and should be taken in your 7 or 8 month of pregnancy.  To register call (734) 763-6295 if seeing an MD and (734) 647-2021 if seeing a Nurse Midwife. 

Car Seat Resources

  • Buckle Up! Hotline - (734) 763-2251 The Buckle Up! Hotline is an easy way to find out dates and times for free community car seat inspections or to enroll in a one-hour car seat class at Mott Children’s Hospital.

During the classes, Mott provides certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians to verify that your car seat is:

* appropriate for the child’s height, weight and age
* installed correctly
* securing the child safely

In an effort to further injury prevention initiatives, C.S Mott Children's Hospital joined Safe Kids Worldwide and became the lead organization of the Safe Kids Washtenaw County Coalition.

Becoming Brothers and Sisters Class is for children and their parents.  The class is for children ages 2-6 and includes a hospital tour, activities, photo, and button.  For information call (734) 973-1014.

  • Lamaze Childbirth Preparation Association of Ann Arbor

  • Inward Bound

  • Depression after Delivery, Inc.

Support & Play Groups

  • Allen Creek Parent/Toddler Group

Groups are for ages 1-2 years; 2-3 years (with parents only); 3 years; 4 years; Parent and Toddler Art Class.  Classes facilitated by teacher and a developmental specialist, the focus is on enjoying and understanding this time in the child's development.  For information call Michelle Graves at (734) 994-3382.

  • Ann Arbor District Library Storytimes

Groups are for ages 2 years old at Main Library; 3 years old and up at Main and all branches; Baby Play Group at Main branch.  Adult accompanies the child for stories, songs, and finger plays with weekly theme.  For information call (734) 327-8301.

  • Ann Arbor YMCA Parent/Child Classes

Groups are for ages 18 months through 4 years.  The YMCA offers different parent/child classes depending on the age of the child and the time of the year.  For information call (734) 663-0536.

  • First Steps-Washtenaw County

Ages birth through kindergarten entry.  Parent educators make home visits and also facilitate parent gatherings and parent/child playgroups.  Developmental screenings and special events are also held throughout the year.  For more information on the program in your school district contact Wanda Killips at (734) 944-8100 ext. 1251. 

  • Hands Across the Water

Adoption Playgroup meets once a month.  Informal playgroup open to all who have adopted, regardless of agency.  Moms invited to come with their children for a morning of play, sharing, and conversation.  For information call (734) 477-0135. 

  • Huron Valley Mothers of Multiples Support Group

The Leslie Science Center (1831 Traver Road) provides natural science and

  • Mothering Arts Group

Thursdays 11:00 am-1:00 pm

Free sessions open to all parents of little ones.  This is an informal group where you can meet with others to share resources, ideas, and support for attachment-style parenting. During the school year there are scheduled topics for each session which are selected on members' suggestions and facilitated by community leaders or the group. Children of all ages welcome.   • Music for Little Folks

Groups for ages 0 through 5 years (special class for infants).  Informal interactive class of music making for infants through preschoolers.  Interactive concerts for preschool through 2nd grade.  Together we chant, folk dance, sing, do finger plays, play percussion instruments, dance with ribbons and scarves, listen, explore movement-sounds-rhythms-melodies-pitch-tempo-continuous flow-lullabies, and steady beat.  Classes are mixed ages.  Curriculum materials are also available for families or playgroups.  For information call (734) 741-1510.

  • New Parent/Infant Support Groups

Abuse (physical, emotional, mental) Resources

  • Assault Crisis Center

Provides services to adult and adolescent survivors of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and stalking in Washtenaw County.  Also provides services to family, friends, and significant others.  For assistance or information call (734) 971-3696 (crisis line) or (734) 528-1388 (TTY).

  • The Domestic Violence Project SAFE House

Provides services and shelter for survivors of domestic violence and their children in Washtenaw County.  For assistance or information call (734) 995-5444 (crisis line) or (734) 973-0242 (business).

  • Parent HELPline

For parents who feel like they might harm their baby.  Provides free confidential information and support for parents who would like to talk to someone about how they are feeling.  For assistance or information call (800) 942-4357.  

  • U of M's Sexual Assault Prevention & Awareness Center (SAPAC)

Provides services for survivors of dating, domestic and sexual violence, sexual harassment and stalking in the University of Michigan community (students, staff, and faculty).  SAPAC also provides counseling for family, friends, and significant others.  Call (734) 936-3333 (crisis line) or (734) 998-9368 (business).

  • Baby Beepers Program Likert Health Pharmacy

Provides beepers at a small cost to expectant parents, regardless of where they plan to deliver.  For information call (734) 712-2222.

  • Birth Network

Meets the third Thursday of each month from 7:00 PM-9:00 PM

A non-profit, consumer-advocacy group promoting awareness of the benefits and availability of healthy, normal pregnancy and childbirth through information and support.  Meetings cover a range of topics.  Meetings currently are held in Macomb, Oakland, and Ingham counties and Northwest Ohio.  For more information visit on-line at http://www.birthnetwork.org

  • The Spine Program

If you are experiencing back pain during your pregnancy and it is interfering with your daily activities it might be time to visit The Spine Program.   • U of M Social Work

Provides counseling and support groups on various topics, including parenting.  For information call (734) 647-8587.
