Nausea
and vomiting (often called "morning sickness") are common
during the first trimester and are usually due to the changes
in hormones in your body. Despite being commonly known as
morning sickness, these symptoms can occur at any time of
day, especially when your stomach is empty. Nausea and vomiting
sometimes continue past the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
If nausea and vomiting become severe, tell you health care
provider. Check with your provider before taking any medicine.
Tips to
relieve nausea and vomiting:
- Get
up slowly in the morning and sit on the side of the bed
for a few minutes. You may want to eat a few crackers or
another light snack before you get out of bed.
- Eat
5 or 6 small meals each day. Try not to let your stomach
get completely empty.
- Avoid
unpleasant smells.
- Avoid
drinking citrus juice, milk, coffee, and tea, especially
with meals.
- Snack
on high protein foods (nuts, peanut butter and crackers,
etc.).
- Try
eating foods with ginger.
- Drink
ginger ale, ginger tea, or peppermint tea.
