Constipation

1st, 2nd, 3rd Trimesters

At least 50% of pregnant women have problems with constipation due to one or more of the following reasons:

  • hormone changes slow the movement of food in the digestive tract
  • iron supplements in prenatal vitamins
  • pressure on the rectum from the enlarged uterus during the last part of pregnancy
Tips to help relieve constipation:
  • drink plenty of fluids -- at least 6-8 glasses of water each day, including 1-2 glasses of fruit juices such as prune juice
  • eat foods high in fiber, such as raw fruits and vegetables and bran cereals
  • exercise regularly
