The "BREASTS" Assessment


 

Below is a helpful checklist to help you successfully breast-feed your baby.  Attending a breast-feeding class or consulting with a lactation specialist are ideal ways to learn the art of successful breast-feeding.  You should learn:  
 
B  =  Body alignment Several feeding positions 
R  =  Right amount  How to tell if your baby is getting enough breast milk
E  =  Elongated nipple Nipples should be elongated and not hurt when baby stops feeding 
A  =  Attachment How to tell if your baby has latched on correctly
S  =  Suck/swallow  Signs that indicate your baby is taking in milk
T  =  Tenderness  Ways to prevent nipple soreness & breast engorgement
S  =  Signals  Feeding cues your baby will give you
