Resident Life
OB/Gyn residents at University Michigan are a cohesive and supportive group. The program fosters time for family and private life outside of residency as well as a sense of teamwork and enthusiasm amongst the residents.
Call Schedule:
In 1998, the house staff adopted a Night Float System for the Obstetrics service resident. The schedule has been a tremendous success. In response to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education duty hour regulations, a Gynecology Night Float System was implemented in 2003.
- First-year residents have 5-8 calls*/month and 1 month of Gynecology Night Float and 1 month of Obstetric Night Float
- Second-year residents have 5-8 calls*/month and 1 month of Gynecology Night Float and 1 month of Obstetric Night Float.
- Third-year residents have 4 or 5 calls*/month and 3 months of Obstetric Night Float.
- Fourth-year residents have 3 or 4 calls*/month.
The On-Call* residents round on the inpatient OB service. The weekend rounding responsibilities on the Gyn and GYN Onc services are split between the residents on those services. Efforts are made to coordinate a resident’s weekend rounding responsibilities with on-call days, thereby minimizing the need to come into the hospital on weekends when a resident is not on-call. *call - 12 hours
Work Hours:
The program is fully supportive of and compliant with the ACGME duty hour regulations. We believe that we can provide a quality educational experience within this framework that emphasizes time for adequate rest and out-of-hospital activities. We do not intend to apply for the 10% exemption.
Vacation:
All residents have four weeks of vacation.
Resident Retreat:
Each year the residents partake in a full-day retreat. This is an opportunity for residents to spend time together away from the hospital, discuss ideas on how to continue to improve and strengthen the training program, and most importantly, to have fun!
