BSN Nurse Extern Program at the University of Michigan: Information for Prospective Applicants (2010)

The University of Michigan Extern Program is a work/study experience, which focuses on the utilization of the nursing process to meet the bio/psycho/social needs of the patient with real or potential life threatening health problems.The program consists of ten weeks of concentrated time spent on a selected unit, under the direct supervision of a RN preceptor. It is a unique experience that allows students to function in a nursing role in a safe and supportive environment (2007 program article).
The Nurse Extern Program offers the participants an exceptional opportunity to develop their nursing skills. The didactic portion of the program is concentrated during the first week of the program. Students who are selected for this program must be prepared for a full 36-40 hour commitment per week (over 360 hours of clinical work).
For 2010, each extern will receive a stipend ($4800).

- Opens: December 1, 2009 (link will be posted here)
- Closes: December 14, 2009, 5pm sharp without exceptions

- Forms from 2 clinical faculty (line up faculty in advance)
Interview dates:
- Adult ICU interviews: February 12, 2010 (times tbd)
- Pediatrics ICU interviews: February 19, 2010 (times tbd)
- Acute care interviews: February 25, 2010 (times tbd)
- Back up interview date: February 26, 2010 (times tbd)
Program dates:
May 10, 2009-Program launch and orientation week
July 16, 2009-Program ends
