Our
Patient and Families
This
unit consists of 16 monitored ICU beds, separated into two
pods of eight beds each. Spacelab monitors are utilized, with
the Central Nursing Station monitoring all of the beds in
each pod. Four Negative/Positive Pressure Isolation Rooms
are located in Pod B. Our patient population age is from newborn
to 18 years, and at times may include some adults when they
are being followed by a pediatric service. Pediatric patients
with almost any diagnosis can be admitted to the PICU, depending
on their medical and nursing care needs. Types of patients
admitted to the unit may typically include pediatric intensive
care unit medical service (including sub-specialties), pediatric
neurosurgery (including trauma), pediatric general surgery
(including trauma), orthopedic surgery, ENT, plastic surgery,
patients requiring ECMO, and others.
Philosophy
of Care
The mission
of the PICU is to provide quality patient- and family-centered
care throughout the critical phase of hospitalization. Care
will be based upon competency, teamwork and efficient use
of resources.
Our philosophy
of nursing includes: the goal of a normalized family unit
as is possible; respect for each child as a unique individual;
consistent and comprehensive care for each child; a multidisciplinary
approach to patient care; uncompromising respect for all persons
and viewpoints; and integration of the growth and development
processes into care. To maintain our nursing care delivery
system, primary nursing participation is expected of all staff.
