Our
Patient and Families
PCTU
consists of 12 monitored ICU beds. The unit's patient population
can range from birth to any age, but the majority, come from
the age range of birth to young adult. Most patients arrive
on PCTU because of congenital heart defects and other cardiac
problems but PCTU is equipped and ready to handle any pediatric
health care issue that requires an ICU setting. The PCTU staff
realize that being hospitalized on an ICU is stressful and
can be difficult for patients and families; so every effort
within the parameters of an ICU setting is made to provide
reassurance and comfort.
Philosophy
of Care
The mission
of the Pediatric Cardio/Thoracic ICU is to provide premier
care to critically ill patients and bring them through what
may be the most crucial time in their young lives. PCTU partners
with the Pediatric Cardiology Clinic and 5 East Mott - General
& Moderate Care Areas to make up the University of Michigan
Congenital Heart Center. This allows the unit to be an essential
part of the seamless delivery of patient care by a multidisciplinary
health care team using a collaborative approach of which nursing
is an integral part. Nursing on PCTU is made up of dedicated,
competent, caring men and women that use the latest in research
and evidence based practice to deliver world class patient
care.
