Chinese nurse manager visiting scholar program launched
PICU Committee on Pain and Sedation (COPS) had their abstract "Assessment and Management of Pain, Sedation and Agitation in Critically Ill Children" accepted for a poster presentation at the national conference of the American Society for Pain Management Nursing. Erin Fraser, BSN, RN; and Sandra Merkel, MS, RN-BC; were also invited to speak on the management of pain and sedation at the pediatric workshop.

Christine Pionk, NP (Employee Health Services), received the Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare's (AOHP's) Joyce Safian Scholarship Award. This prestigious award is granted annually at AOHP's annual national conference to a past or present AOHP executive board officer who best portrays an occupational health professional in healthcare role model. A $500 scholarship accompanies the award to be used for educational purposes at Christine's discretion, as well as a dignified, engraved plaque. This scholarship can be used for classes, conferences, professional subscriptions or any other educational purpose.
The SICU physician/nursing/nutrition team have won the Society of Critical Care Medicine, 2010 GI/Nutrition Specialty Award. Receipt of the SCCM Specialty Awards are based on abstract scores. The awards are intended to recognize excellence in critical care research. The SICU abstract entitled "Implementation of SCCM Nutrition Bundle in the SICU: Achieving Prompt Enteral Access and Goal Nutrition Support" won the award.
Terri Voepel-Lewis, RN (Anesthesia); Jennifer Dammeyer, CNS (CCMU); and Sandy Merkel, CNS; were published in the American Journal of Critical Care. Peg Esper, Nurse Practitioner (Cancer Center), has an article she authored published entitled "Immune Modulation in Melanoma and Advanced Cancer Therapy: Anti-Cyctotoxic T Lymphocyte-Associated Antigen 4 Monocolonal Antibodies".
Flight Nurses Ted Adelmann and Paul Munger competed for their first time against teams across North America, winning the METI Cup Competition for UMHS for the third time after defeating 16 teams in the largest competition ever. The Annual Critical Care Skills Competition was held at the Air Medical Transport Conference in San Jose, California.
Cyndi Bower, MS, Nurse Manager of MCRU; Nancy Kueckels-Averill, BSN, Clinical Care Coordinator; Mary Fedewa, MSN, CNS, PNP; and Chris Conrad, MSN, CNS, from the Michigan Clinical Research Unit (MCRU); attended the First International Association of Clinical Research Nurses (IACRN) Conference last week in Boston. Chris Conrad and Mary Fedewa had their poster accepted and presented "Nursing Innovation at it's Best, Bringing Research Support 2 U". Cyndi Bower also presented her poster, "Using Benner's Stages of Clinical Competence and Applying it to Clinical Research Nurses as They Traverse the Five Levels of Proficiency". On September 16, 2009, the University of Michigan Health System Department of Nursing Services launched the Chinese Nurse Manager Visiting Scholar Program in collaboration with the Peking University Third Hospital in Beijing, China. Two visiting nursing leaders will participate in this program, which will be administered by Educational Services for Nursing, for twelve weeks from 9/16/09-12/14/09.
Our nursing scholars are Huizhi Zhang- Vice Director of Nursing and Panfeng Wang- Nursing Department Manager of Neurology.
The Chinese managers will have opportunities to visit our units, shadow our nursing managers, leaders and clinical staff, and participate in the joint exchange of evidence based practice ideas and research.
