Earlier this year, MLive requested submissions from their readers for "Michigan nurses that work tirelessly to care for their patients, inspire those around them, and impact their workplace for the better in order to show appreciation for these selfless caregivers." From the many submissions, Michigan Medicine had two nurses who were honored for going above and beyond, changing the lives of their patients and their patients' families.

Steven DavisClinical Nursing Director Chantell Krage shared: "Joe (Pomorski)is an exceptional part of our team and it was humbling to see him and all the other winners be honored. He spoke of all of his unit contributing to the success of the team through the hard work done every day. Nursing truly is an amazing profession! From the first day of your first job, your career will consist of caring for people, no matter the role you chose."

Clinical Nursing Specialist Regi Freeman shared: "Steven (Davis) provides the finest care to our patients incorporating holistic concepts including physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects. He has an innate ability to connect with patients and meet them at their level. He goes above and beyond in problem-solving to meet patient needs. He is also the true definition of an informal leader. He is truly dedicated to our unit and is integral to the success of our initiatives."

Nurse Leader Fellowship Received Re-Accreditation with Distinction

On Wednesday, July 26th, the University of Michigan Health Nurse Leader Fellowship was re-accredited with distinction as a transition-to-program by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation in Practice Transition Programs.

Jessica Spruit Inducted as Fellow of American Academy of Nurse Practitioners

Jessica Spruit, DNP, CPNP-AC, Nurse Practitioner (NP) with Pediatric Palliative Care team at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, was one of two Nurse Practitioners from the state of Michigan inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP) this month in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Georgia Hazlett Receives 2023 Anthony V. DeVito II Memorial Award

Congratulations to Georgia Hazlett, BSN, RN, 2023 Anthony V. DeVito II Memorial Award recipient. This Award recognizes outstanding service, dedication, and commitment to excellence in the field of geriatrics education in Michigan. Georgia was recognized for being an "outstanding nurse, collaborator and mentor" with "a depth of experience and superior knowledge base to interpret clinical information and formulate a comprehensive treatment plan for our complex geriatric patients". Georgia was also noted to be exceptionally caring and very responsive to red (emergency) calls. The award presentation will take place at the 2023 Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Geriatrics Society , May 4-6, 2023, in Long Beach, CA.

Lindsy Schmitz and Katie Barnes Represent Nursing at Michigan at American Association of Neuroscience Nurses

Nursing at Michigan was well-represented at the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses annual educational meeting in Orlando this month -- Lindsy Schmitz, BSN, RN and Katie Barnes, BSN, RN presented their poster on using innovative educational delivery methods to provide neuroscience nursing education. Winnie Wood, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, Inga Vitins, BSN, RN and Mary Jo Kocan, MSN, CNRN were also co-authors.

Clinical Nurse Specialists Highlighted for Scholarship and Leadership

In honor of Med-Surg Nurses Week, Dr. Freeman shared her thoughts about this nursing specialty with Minority Nurse. 4C Earns Prestigious Gold Level Beacon Award for Excellence

The Beacon Award is given to units where “where patients receive their principal nursing care. A unit must meet defined criteria in the following categories: Leadership Structures and Systems; Appropriate Staffing and Staff Engagement; Effective Communication, Knowledge Management and Learning Development; Evidence-Based Practice and Processes; and Outcome Measurements.”4C is the third unit at Michigan Medicine to earn gold-level distinction, joining Mott’s 12E and Adult Hospital’s 6D. 4C, 12E and 6D are three of only four units across the entire state of Michigan to currently hold a gold-level Beacon Award.

LaToya Freeman Appointed President of Ann Arbor National Black Nurses Association

At the 50th annual National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) conference, LaToya Freeman, DNP, APRN, ACCNS-AG, CPPS, HNB-BC, PCCN, was named the inaugural and founding president of the Ann Arbor chapter.

Freeman is a clinical nurse specialist for the Medical Short Stay Unit (MSSU). The NBNA was organized in 1971 and has 92 chartered chapters in 35 states. Congratulations, LaToya and all our nurses as part of the Ann Arbor chapter of NBNA.

 

Expertise, Positivity Spur Veteran Nurse to Educator of the Year Award

Karrie Martis B.S.N., B.A., R.N., NPD-BC, has accomplished so much in her 30-plus years as a nurse at U-M, but one of her greatest achievements was bestowed this summer: U-M Clinical Simulation Center (CSC) Educator of the Year.

“I’m dumbfounded,” Martis said, when asked about being nominated and winning an award. “I’m not usually at a loss for words. It took me a good half-hour to think about it and respond. I still haven’t wrapped my head around it.”

The award recognized her achievements in facilitating learners and colleagues in educational venues across Michigan Medicine. The courses that Martis helps facilitate include the Nursing Critical Care Orientation, EKG courses for nursing, Preceptor Development, New Educator Orientation and the Simulation Facilitation Course, which is open to eligible U-M medical faculty, nursing education or allied health personnel in concert with the CSC.

12 East Receives Beacon Award for Excellence - GOLD LEVEL

12 East (Pediatric Medical/Surgical General Care Unit) was awarded the Beacon Award for Excellence - gold level. The Beacon Award is offered by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN), and this award validates staff-driven excellence and patient outcomes that exceed national benchmarks. The Beacon Award recognizes an individual unit for its consistent and systematic approach to evidence-based care to optimize patient outcomes. 12 East is a positive and supportive work environment with excellent collaboration between colleagues and leaders, high engagement, and low turnover. 12 East is driven by the nursing staff, nurturing empowerment, and leadership.
