The Neonatal Follow-Up and Chronic Illness Program at the University of Michigan provides periodiccheck-ups for babies who were in Holden. All babies born with a birth weight of less than 2 1/2 pounds, or babies who were very sick are followed in the program. We also take referrals from families or their doctors if there is a concern about a baby's development. Follow-up is important during the first 2 years of life because this is a time of rapid growth and development, especially of the brain.

Infants are typically seen at 4-6 months from their due date, then every 4-6 months until age 2 or 3 years. Each baby is evaluated by a pediatric nurse practitioner and/or a developmental pediatrician who has extensive experience in following NICU infants. A physical therapist, a developmental psychologist, a nutritionist and a social worker are also part of the clinic staff.

The clinic is held every Wednesday at the Taubman Center within the University of Michigan Medical Center. There is a fee for this service, that is covered by many insurances. Families are advised to check with their insurance company for their outpatient benefits. All infants are screened by our nurse coordinator before entering the program.
