One of the strengths of the UMHS Professional Development Framework is that it allows the nurse to self-initiate the process for advancement. Additionally, there may be times that a nurse chooses to take a step back in framework in order to pursue other professional or life priorities. Opportunities to move within the Professional Develop Framework are open and flexible, with a few general parameters:
Level A Nurses: New graduates are hired into Level A. As early as 12 months, but generally by 18 months, the Level A nurse will apply for advancement to Level C. If for some reason at the 18 month point the nurse requires more time to develop the behaviors characteristic of Level C, that nurse will be automatically placed at Level B.
New Hire Level B Nurses: New hires with greater than 18 months of nursing experience are hired into Framework Level B. Per Contract Addendum D, Section E, 1), these nurses “will be advanced to Level C according to the unit-based process. It is expected that this will occur within six months of the date of hire or transfer.”
Applicants may “skip” levels. For example, a nurse at Level C who believes her practice and portfolio demonstrate Level E practice, may apply to Level E.
All nurses contemplating advancement within the Framework, whether it be through the unit-based process to Level C or the Central Committee process to Level D or E, are encouraged to take time for self reflection and self assessment to determine readiness based on the Professional Development Framework Behaviors.Once the decision is made to apply for advancement, it is time for preparation of your Application Portfolio. |
