The role of Coach is key to the success of the UMHS Professional Development Framework. An initial cadre of 43 coaches participated in two days of learning in spring 2006 in order to be ready to assist UMHS nurses over the course of their Framework progression.
The timing of these Coach Development Days allows coaches to be informed and ready as nurses begin their individual planning for Framework advancement.
Day 1
In conjunction with other UMHS Nursing Leaders, Coaches learn the details of Framework philosophy, principles, elements and processes. A large section of the day “for Coaches only” focuses on the role of the coach in a transformational process such as the Professional Development Framework.
Day 2
Framework Coaches convene to learn more about the development of Practice Exemplars. Dr. Chris Pacini, Ph.D., RN, works with the coaches on understanding exemplars — what they are, why they are so valuable, how to write one and how to best assist nurses in “drawing out” their stories and overcoming barriers to sharing their practice. Additional time will be spent on specific coaching strategies, including Coach Drop-in sessions, Coach Hotline and more.
Further education and development of Professional Development Framework coaches will be an ongoing endeavor. Investment in coaches provides a return for all within UMHS Nursing.
Coach education prepares coaches for informed and helpful engagement with staff nurse applicants. We are grateful for our coaches!
