Professional Development Framework:
Professional Statement Sample
I work on unit 8B, an adult oncology (medical, hematological, surgical and gynecological oncology) and gynecology general care unit in University Hospital. Our patients range in age from 18 to 90 plus, their length of stays from overnight to months. Many of the cancer patients return for therapy or for treatment of complications of cancer treatment or for symptom management.
I enjoy the challenge of understanding complex diseases and skillfully administering chemotherapy. Providing education and emotional support to the patients and their families (spouses, partners, parents, children) is important to me. There are many opportunities to be creative in supporting patients through what is sometimes the most terrifying and most physically, emotionally and spiritually difficult experience of their lives.
I have chosen this unit for the challenges it offers for me to learn, develop and enhance my nursing skills in assessment, planning and interventions. Working on 8B with a wide range of people confronting tremendous life issues contributes to my own personal growth in meaningful ways.
I have had many opportunities to contribute to my unit. During my recent term on the 8B Workload Review Committee, I had a leadership role regarding streamlining shift report toward goals of reducing end of shift OT and improving patient care.
I love this work, and cannot foresee ever leaving oncology nursing. Working as preceptor with new hires is rewarding. Helping to bring them into a comfort zone in this complex setting is my way of contributing to retention on 8B. I would like to continue this work with individual nurses in orientation, nurturing their evolving practice while promoting the family centered approach to care that we value here at UMHS.
