Our Patient and Families
The Emergency Department at the University of Michigan is an integral part of an academic center and Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center. The Emergency Department consists of 59 beds and we see approximately 70,000 patients a year. These patients include all ages and present a full spectrum of physical and mental conditions.

The areas within the ED are Children’s Emergency Services, Acute Care, Resuscitation, MEDPATH, and MECA. The Emergency Department staff rotates through all areas of the Emergency Department.

Patient priority is determined using the Emergency Severity Index. Clinical documentation is performed via computer access and programming. The nurses are provided with specialized training via the ENA classes of TNCC and ENPC. All staff maintains ACLS certification.

Philosophy of Care
Being an Emergency Department nurse means being able to understand that you never know what your next patient will be and being able to accept that challenge. You may have a patient with a condition as simple as a laceration to their finger or something as devastating as a heart attack or trauma. Emergency Nurses must be able to recognize life threatening problems, prioritize patient care and carry out resuscitative actions quickly. Emergency Nurses also may be the first nurse in contact with the family whose loved one is injured or ill and they will need to provide support and comfort for both the family and the patient while providing accurate information. It is important to have excellent and rapid assessment skills while being confident in your decision-making skills.

Our Nursing Team
Our Emergency Department staff consists of nurses with experience in both adult and pediatric emergency and critical care nursing. The nurses and techs provide continuous care to all levels of acuity and across the age continuum. The staff is trained to respond quickly to acute illness and injury. Many of the Emergency Department nurses also hold certification in Emergency Nursing. Most of the Emergency Department technicians hold a paramedic license and have pre-hospital experience.
