UMHS Nursing Clinical Placement:
Prospective Students Interested in a Preceptorship

All requests for student clinical placement at the University of Michigan Health System must be coordinated through the Clinical Placement Coordinator at clinicalplacement@med.umich.edu

There is extremely limited availability for preceptorships for non-UM school of nursing students within the University of Michigan Hospital and Health System as we continue to grow our nursing programs and maximize our capacity. Prior to any arrangements being made: you must receive confirmation from the Clinical Placement Coordinator that all UM student placements have been secured. Please be aware that this information may not be known until several weeks before the start of the term. Once you have received confirmation from Clinical Placement that you can proceed with a practicum here, please follow the steps below.

Step 1: Submit Affiliation Agreement

An affiliation agreement must be in place between the student's school of nursing and UMHS. If no agreement currently exists, please send the name, address, phone and fax numbers of the school of nursing contact person to: clinicalplacement@med.umich.edu so that an agreement can be facilitated by our UMHS Contracting Office. This process varies in length of time from several weeks to several months, depending on the length of time needed for the two parties to reach an agreement of terms.

Step 2: Identify Preceptor

A preceptor must be identified and all course material must be reviewed and approved by the preceptor. Clinical hours should be arranged directly with the preceptor.

For preceptor placements, we believe that the instructor and student can best determine who the precptor should be, based on the desired experience for the student. Therefore, Clinical Placement at UMHS does not assist in the arrangement of preceptors for students.

Please remember: prior to any arrangements being made for non-UM students, you must confirm with Clinical Placement at clinicalplacement@med.umich.edu, that all U of M students have already been accommodated with their placements here.

Step 3: Identify Instructor

Each student must have an instructor identified. Please send clinicalplacement@med.umich.edu your instructor's name, school of nursing email address and phone number.

All student and instructor names must be submitted through the UMHS Identity Registration System (IRS) in order for computer access codes to be created. Expect this process to take two weeks or longer.

Step 4: Obtain ID Badge/Complete Institutional Requirements

Please review the Resources tab for information regarding the requirments for placement at UMHS.

  • You must obtain a MCard ID badge at the Key/ID Office. The signed ID Request Form can be obtained through the Clinical Placement Office. The ID must be worn at all times in the clinical areas.
  • You must complete all required learning activities* on your MLearning Learning Plan. Please see the "Institutional Requirement List" on the Resource page.
  • Please review all information in the Policies/Guidelines section before beginning your practicum.


*It is recommended that all nurse practitioner students take the 8 hour CareLink instructor led classroom course in MLearning, rather than the online course. The course is: UMCL-20100 UM-CareLink RN Course.

CNS students should discuss the need for the full classroom course with their preceptor.

The Institutional Requirements in MLearning must be completed prior to the first day in your clinical area.
