Graduate nursing student placements at the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Systems are determined by the individual practitioners and requests should be directed to the APRN that you are interested in working with. The Clinical Placement Office does not assist in this aspect.
Due to our current commitment to multiple nursing school programs, we regret that we are unable to accommodate preceptor placement requests by individual students unless you are a UMHS employee. Further, we are unable to accommodate any shadow or observational experience requests.
If you are a UMHS employee in need of a clinical placement, please be aware that all placements within UMHS must be coordinated through the Clinical Placement Office in the Professional Development and Education Department. Once you have identified a preceptor, we can then be certain that the steps below are followed.

An affiliation agreement must be in place between the student's school of nursing and UMHS. If no agreement currently exists, please send the name, address, phone and fax numbers of the school of nursing contact person to firstname.lastname@example.org so that an agreement can be facilitated by the UMHS Contracting Office. This process varies in length of time from Eight to Twelve weeks, depending on the length of time needed for the two parties to reach an agreement of terms.
APRNs at UMHS independently determine whether they will precept students. You must contact them directly to secure a placement. The Clinical Placement Office is unable to provide assistance in this aspect of the process.

University of Michigan-Ann Arbor School of Nursing students receive first priority for preceptor placements within the Health System. If you are a non-UM-Ann Arbor student, please use the following timeline when approaching UMHS staff as a preceptor for your practicum:
Once a preceptor is identified, all course material MUST be reviewed and approved by the preceptor. Clinical hours should be arranged directly with the preceptor.
The Clinical Placement Office must receive confirmation from the preceptor that an arrangement has been made to work with a student. Please send confirmation of your arrangement with a preceptor to email@example.com.
In addition to your email communication, placement requests must be submitted to the UMHS Clinical Placement Office by your school of nursing through ACE-MAPP. The request must include the preceptor's name and the requested location (i.e., the unit or specialty area).

All students who complete a clinical practicum at UMHS are required to have access to our clinical systems. This access is processed by our Medical Campus IT Department (MCIT) through our Identity Registration System (IRS). Each school of nursing that participates in clinical placements with UMHS must have a registrar or designee identified who can upload student information into our IRS. Please contact the Clinical Placement Office at email@example.com to determine what information is needed to process the SON registrar for this function.
All students with a clinical placement at UMHS will be granted access to our computer systems based on the placement location and the specifications of the role within the health system.
Please be certain to validate access code (uniqname or user ID and password) functionality before beginning clinical hours. If there are any issues with IDs or passwords, please contact the MCIT Help Desk at 734-936-8000.

IMPORTANT: As a nursing student at UMHS you must complete required learning activities prior to beginning your clinical practicum.
Required learning activities include MiChart Training and annually-required UMHS Mandatory Training. MiChart is the electronic system UMHS uses for patient care records. Mandatories are a set of online learning modules UMHS faculty and staff complete annually to meet UMHS internal and external regulatory agencies’ policy and safety requirements.
MiChart Training Requirements and Completion Instructions: MiChart training consists of one or more instructor-led training classes and one or more online eLearning activities. If you do not complete all required MiChart training you will not be able to access the MiChart system and will not be able to document or manage your patients’ health care needs.
To access MiChart eLearnings and find the date, time and location of your required MiChart training classes go to https://trainingportal.med.umich.edu and login with your LEVEL 2 username and password (Outlook).

UMHS Annual Mandatory Learning Activities Completion Instructions: UMHS Annual Mandatories consist of a set of online learning activities required by regulatory agencies, such as the Joint Commission, or as required by UMHS policy. UMHS Annual Mandatories are completed through the UMHS learning management system: MLearning.
Completing Mandatories on a Computer on the UMHS Network: To access MLearning from a computer on the UMHS network, go to https://mlearning.med.umich.edu.
Completing Mandatories on a Computer NOT on the UMHS Network: If you are accessing MLearning to complete your mandatories from home or from a computer not on the UMHS network, you must follow the instructions below.
1. Go to http://level1.med.umich.edu
2. Login in with your Kerberos/Level-1 password (same as you use to view your paycheck or grades)
3. Click the link to MLearning
4. Log in to MLearning with your Level-2 (Outlook)
5. Complete all Activities listed under Planned Learning at the bottom of your Learning Plan (your Home Page in MLearning)

All documentation in the electronic medical record will be completed in MiChart. Access to MiChart is granted upon successful completion of all required eLearning, classroom content, and associated quizzes.
Listed below are the MiChart training requirements by student type: The MiChart class dates for WINTER TERM will be listed by early December.
For all MiChart Enrollment questions, please call the MCIT Help Desk at 734-936-8000 (6-8000) and press '1' for non-providers.

You must obtain a MCard ID badge at the Key ID Office. The Clinical Placement Office will provide you with the signed ID Request Form that you must take to the Key ID Office to obtain your badge. The ID badge must be worn at all times in the clinical areas. If you lose or damage your ID, you will need to pay a $20.00 replacement fee to the Key ID Office to get a new card.
Please Note: If you are a UMHS employee, you do not need to replace your MCard ID. Please be certain to identify yourself as a student when functioning in that role.
