UMHS Nursing Clinical Placement:
Graduate Students Interested in a Preceptorship
Graduate nursing student placements at the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Systems are determined by the individual practitioners and requests should be directed to the APRN that you are interested in working with. The Clinical Placement Office does not assist in this capacity.
All graduate student placements must, however, be coordinated through the Clinical Placement Office once a preceptor is identified so that we can be certain:
- An affiliation agreement is in place with the school of nursing and our health system.
- Timeline guidelines are followed for external students, ensuring that U of M School of Nursing students receive first priority for placements.
- The onboarding process is complete for students, ensuring that you receive access to our computer systems and buildings and that all compliance standards are met.
Please click on the steps below to read detailed information on the steps that must be followed to obtain a placement at UMHS:
Step 1: Submit Affiliation Agreement
Please use the following guidelines:
- University of Michigan School of Nursing students receive first priority for preceptor placements within the health system. If you are a non-UM student, please use the following timeline when approaching UMHS staff as a preceptor for your practicum:
• Fall term - after July 1st
• Winter term - after November 1st
• Spring/Summer term - after March 1st Once a preceptor is identified, all course material must be reviewed and approved by the preceptor. Clinical hours should be arranged directly with the preceptor.
The Clinical Placement Office must receive confirmation from the preceptor that an arrangement has been made to work with a student. Please send confirmation of your arrangement with a preceptor to Clinicalplacement@med.umich.edu.
