UMHS Nursing Clinical Placement:
Graduate Students Interested in a Preceptorship
Graduate nursing student placements at the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Systems are determined by the individual practitioners and requests should be directed to the APRN that you are interested in working with. The Clinical Placement Office does not assist in this capacity.
All graduate student placements must, however, be coordinated through the Clinical Placement Office once a preceptor is identified so that we can be certain:
- An affiliation agreement is in place with the school of nursing and our health system.
- Timeline guidelines are followed for external students, ensuring that U of M School of Nursing students receive first priority for placements.
- The onboarding process is complete for students, ensuring that you receive access to our computer systems and buildings and that all compliance standards are met.
Please click on the steps below to read detailed information on the steps that must be followed to obtain a placement at UMHS:
Please use the following guidelines:
- University of Michigan School of Nursing students receive first priority for preceptor placements within the health system. If you are a non-UM student, please use the following timeline when approaching UMHS staff as a preceptor for your practicum:
• Fall term - after July 1st
• Winter term - after November 1st
• Spring/Summer term - after March 1st Once a preceptor is identified, all course material must be reviewed and approved by the preceptor. Clinical hours should be arranged directly with the preceptor.
The Clinical Placement Office must receive confirmation from the preceptor that an arrangement has been made to work with a student. Please send confirmation of your arrangement with a preceptor to Clinicalplacement@med.umich.edu.
Please review the Resources tab for information regarding the requirements for placement at UMHS.
You must obtain a MCard ID badge at the Key/ID Office. The Clinical Placement Office will provide you with the signed ID Request Form that you must take to the Key/ID Office to obtain your badge. The ID must be worn at all times in the clinical areas.
You must complete all required learning activities on your MLearning Learning Plan. Please see the Institutional Requirement List. The Institutional Requirements in MLearning must be completed prior to your first day in your clinical area.
After completing all online institutional requirements, please print and fax your MLearning Transcript to the Professional Development & Education Office at (734) 764-5316.
Information regarding our online documentation systems:
Nurse Practitioner students in the inpatient setting must take the CareLink for Physicians course in MLearning. You must register for an online course. The course is UMCL-10100 UM-CareLink for Physicians Training and UMCL-10200 for the competency test. You must complete both activities.
All graduate students in the inpatient setting must complete the online Centricity course in MLearning.
As our new online medical record is implemented throughout UMHS, advanced practice registered nursing (APRN) students must complete the required MiChart training activities. If your clinical location is in one of the areas listed below, you must complete both the online and classroom MiChart training prior to the start of your clinical session:
Adult ED or Children's Emergency Services (Course: ASAP - approximately 10 mins. online and 12 hours classroom training)
Ambulatory Care Services (Course: AMB - approximately 50 mins. online and 6 hours classroom training).
(If you are uncertain if the training requirement for MiChart applies to you, please discuss this with your instructor, clinical coordinator or preceptor).
Please email MiChart-Class-Registration@med.umich.edu to register for both the online training and classroom course. You must have your Level 2 login prior to registering for the training. You will not have access to the MiChart documentation system until you have completed the required training.
For questions or registration you may also contact MiChart by phone at (734) 232-6016.
Please review all information in the Policies/Guidelines section before beginning your practicum.
