The population includes adult men and women who may experience
chronic as well as acute illness. Beds are managed by the
Division of Medicine-Cardiology. Common medical diagnoses
of our patients include: acute myocardial infarction, coronary
syndromes, cardiogenic shock, congestive heart failure, Cardiomyopathy,
Dysrhythmias, Pulmonary Hypertension, Valvular insufficiency/stenosis,
dissecting thoracic/abdominal aortic aneurysm, pericarditis,
sepsis, and heart transplant complications.
Philosophy
of Care
Nursing is the diagnosis and treatment
of human responses to life threatening health problems. The
scope of critical care nursing is defined by the dynamic interaction
of the critically ill patient and family, the critical care
nurse, and the critical care environment.
Our Nursing Team
The goal of nursing in the Cardiac
Intensive Care Unit is to ensure the effective interaction
of these three requisite elements to effect competent nursing
practice and optimal patient outcomes within an environment
supportive of both. The framework within which CICU nursing
is practiced is based on a scientific body of knowledge, the
nursing process, and multidisciplinary collaboration in the
care of patients. CICU offers total patient care nursing care
delivery, with a staff mix ratio of 85% RN staff and 15% ancillary
staff including ICU technicians.
